Little Shop of Physics secures $50K grant to expand science education for youth

The Little Shop of Physics workshop at Colorado State University is enhancing science education through engaging hands-on experiments, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the American Physical Society’s Division of Condensed Matter Physics. One of their experiments includes a pinwheel that lights up with colors (red, orange, blue) based on the airflow it receives, illustrating that different colors of light require varying energy levels.

The funding aims to reach over 10,000 people, including developing videos and resources for teachers, and expanding outreach activities to schools across multiple states. Assistant professor Yulia Maximenko emphasizes the importance of making complex science accessible to all, echoing the sentiment that understanding should be fostered from a young age.

The grant will also support a dedicated room for condensed matter physics at their upcoming open house, expected to draw over 10,000 visitors. The mission underscores igniting curiosity in science, hoping even a small percentage of attendees will pursue further exploration of the concepts presented. New experiments are slated for debut at the open house in March 2027, along with appearances at the APS Global Summit.
