New Bipartisan Senate Caucus on Science to Focus on AI Issues

Senators John Hickenlooper (D-Co.) and Dave McCormick (R-Pa.) have announced the formation of a new Senate Bipartisan Science and Innovation Caucus aimed at supporting U.S. scientific research and innovation, with a particular focus on AI policy. Hickenlooper highlighted the necessity of examining AI regulations and addressing the competitive landscape with countries like China, while also acknowledging the potential threats AI poses. The caucus will explore various aspects of the scientific enterprise, including its economic and national security impacts.

Hickenlooper, as the ranking member on the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Technology, and Data Privacy, noted the overlapping responsibilities regarding AI within different committees. McCormick emphasized the importance of investing in science and entrepreneurship as distinguishing features of America.

The formation of this caucus is timely, coinciding with House Democrats considering the establishment of a select committee on AI if they gain control in upcoming elections.
