Euro NCAP awards BYD’s electric truck a five-star rating at IAA

The BYD ETT 44 has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first long-haul electric truck to be rated by Euro NCAP, establishing a new standard for safety in commercial electric vehicles. The announcement was made during the IAA Transportation 2026 event in Hannover, where three long-haul trucks from BYD, Mercedes-Benz, and Scania were awarded five-star ratings, alongside the CitySafe award. In contrast, Iveco’s S-WAY received only two stars in the regional distribution category.

Key Highlights of the BYD ETT 44:

  • Safety Ratings: The ETT 44 scored 89% for Safe Driving, attributed to excellent direct visibility from its low cab, enhanced door glazing, and digital eMirrors.
  • Crash Avoidance: It received a 73% score, which is lower compared to competitors like Mercedes-Benz and Scania. Euro NCAP highlighted the need for improvements in its frontal collision prevention and lane departure systems.

Performance of Competing Models:

  • Mercedes-Benz Actros F: Upgraded to five stars from four, earning 79% for Safe Driving and 82% for Crash Avoidance.
  • Scania G and R-Series: Both models achieved a remarkable 96% for Crash Avoidance, although much of their safety features are optional.
  • Iveco S-WAY: Scored 67% for Safe Driving and just 20% for Crash Avoidance, resulting in a two-star rating.

Euro NCAP is encouraging operators to prioritize safety by selecting standard safety technologies rather than settling for basic models.
