Why SpaceX is Developing an Alternative Space Internet System Aside from Starlink

SpaceX recently launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, deploying the final three satellites for SES’s O3b mPower constellation. This project took over a decade to complete, differentiating itself from the Starlink satellites by operating at a medium Earth orbit of approximately 5,000 miles, compared to Starlink’s low orbit of 340 miles.

O3b mPower’s configuration allows for broad coverage with only 13 satellites, catering to enterprise customers like airlines and offshore energy operators, unlike Starlink, which targets consumers and small businesses. A partnership exists enabling cruise ships to leverage both networks depending on their needs.

This mission marked SpaceX’s 29th trip to orbit, featuring historical missions and a successful booster landing, underscoring SpaceX’s capability to accommodate various satellite launches alongside its extensive Starlink program. Overall, SES benefits from a tailored network, while SpaceX continues to expand its operational portfolio.
