A Family Relocated to Thailand; After 8 Months, They’ve Returned to Utah.

The Challenges of Living Abroad: A Family’s Journey

Braydon Barrett and his family pursued a dream of living in Asia after years of planning and discussions. With a remote fitness coaching business, Braydon felt confident making the leap. They chose Thailand for its visa options, even going for a scouting trip before settling in Pattaya. However, as their adventure began, they faced unexpected obstacles.

Visa Missteps and Overwhelming Decisions

Upon arrival, Braydon discovered a significant error regarding their visas—the family had only 30 days instead of the anticipated 90 to sort out their long-term plans. This setback forced them to rethink their future, ultimately leading them to Malaysia for a temporary stay. They learned that Thailand introduced a new visa for digital nomads, but they would need to be outside Thailand for approval.

While trying to navigate these challenges, they found themselves jumping between countries, applying for the right visa while managing the stress of travel with a young child. At one point, they faced a tumultuous night in Manila, which became the breaking point for Braydon.

The Hard Realities of Remote Work

Braydon’s responsibility to manage his business from the other side of the world brought its own challenges. With clients and employees based in the U.S., he found himself working at odd hours, often waking at 3 a.m. to take calls. This strain paired with family challenges, led the couple to feel that they had made a mistake in leaving their home.

Eventually, after eight months abroad, they made the tough decision to return to Utah, recognizing the stress of their situation.

Reflections on a Unique Experience

Despite the challenges, Braydon and his wife emerged closer, gaining a new respect for each other through stressful situations. They cherished their time in Asia and found the culture, people, and kindness towards their son to be enriching. Living abroad, they noted, isn’t always the idyllic experience portrayed on social media, but rather a mix of highs and lows.

With their visas still valid for five years, Braydon expressed hope of returning to Thailand someday, emphasizing that while their journey faced hurdles, it ultimately gave them valuable life lessons and memories.
