“Aloha: Beyond a Greeting” – Insights from Locals for Visitors to Hawaii

The name “lūʻau” originates from a dish made with young taro leaves, which was traditionally served at these gatherings. Nowadays, a lūʻau can celebrate various milestones such as birthdays, graduations, or weddings. The preparation often takes days, with family members coming together to cook and organize for a joyful day of celebration. It resembles a family reunion, with multiple generations sitting around the same table, engaging in “talking story,” a Hawaii Pidgin term for catching up and sharing tales, often accompanied by pupus (snacks).
