The James S. McDonnell Planetarium at the Saint Louis Science Center has undergone a major technological upgrade, becoming the most advanced hybrid planetarium in the U.S. After six months of enhancements, it now features an optomechanical star projector, the GOTO Chiron III, which simulates a star-filled sky, and a Digistar full dome projection system that allows for immersive exploration of the universe. Visitors can observe everything from deep-sky objects to Earth’s climate through real-time data from NASA and NOAA.
The planetarium has also introduced new shows, including “The Earth Today,” which examines satellite data on weather patterns affecting the Midwest. In addition to visual improvements, a new surround sound system, including an Auracast feature for enhanced audio clarity via Bluetooth devices, has been implemented.
This marks the largest upgrade to planetarium technology in 25 years, with the team eager to share the excitement with their visitors. New programs like “The Planets of the Sun” promise to provide closer looks at the planets in our solar system.
