New StarCraft Game Announcement at BlizzCon
Following the announcement of a new StarCraft game during BlizzCon’s Opening Ceremony, creative director Dan Hay shared insights about this project with Korean media. Here’s what we know so far:
Game Concept and Structure
- The upcoming StarCraft title is envisioned as a narrative-driven open-world shooter.
- Players will create and customize their characters, following a structured story that has a beginning, middle, and end, which is distinct from live service multiplayer formats.
- “If I were to describe the overall structure we currently envision, it’s a ‘box product,'” said Hay, emphasizing that it offers a standalone experience.
Gameplay Features
- Players can explore a rich open world but will encounter “serious missions” that affect the narrative.
- Should players find a mission too challenging, they can engage in other activities, explore, and improve their gear before attempting the mission again.
- Hay noted, “I like wandering around slowly, exploring, discovering new things, and encountering unexpected turns.”
Setting and Narrative
- The game is set 70 years after StarCraft 2, allowing for new stories, adventures, and character developments while retaining the series’ signature mood and atmosphere.
- “Factions that looked a certain way in the past might have shifted their perspectives over 70 years,” Hay remarked, providing room for narrative evolution.
Release and Development
- Although the game won’t release until 2030, Blizzard has already posted several relevant job openings related to the project.
