Man Admitted to Hospital with Hematuria; Doctors Discover Needle in His Heart: ScienceAlert

This case involves a 35-year-old man with an intellectual disability who presented with blood in his urine and was found to have a 36-mm sewing needle lodged in his heart. Despite having multiple foreign bodies in various body parts, including the bladder and pelvic region, the patient displayed no immediate cardiovascular symptoms. Imaging revealed a linear shadow on his heart, leading to further investigation that confirmed the needle’s location in the left ventricle.

Surgery was necessary to remove the needle due to concerns about potential complications such as migration, rupture, or infection. Interestingly, prior to this incident, the patient had undergone a similar procedure two years earlier for needle removal, although the origins of these needles remain unclear. The possibility of self-inflicted injury is suggested, hinting at a link to behavioral health issues.

This case highlights the challenges in diagnosing such rare and insidious conditions, particularly when patients are unable to communicate their medical history effectively. Only a handful of similar cases have been documented, emphasizing the unique nature of this situation.
