Florida Advocates for New US Space Academy Location

Florida’s Bid to Host the New U.S. Space Academy

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A new school focused on the future of space exploration aims to train the next generation of workers for NASA, the Space Force, and the broader space industry.

President Donald Trump has proposed the establishment of a United States Space Academy, inspired by military academies. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has chaired the initial commission for this academy and is encouraging governors to propose their states as potential hosts.

Florida lawmakers, including Congressman Mike Haridopolos, are actively advocating for the state:

“Texas, Alabama, Mississippi have major posts, so they’re all gonna be vying for this incredible opportunity to build a new service academy,” Haridopolos stated. “We like our chances in Florida. After all, this is where the rockets actually take off.”

In the Space Coast region, multiple job opportunities exist at the Kennedy Space Center and with commercial partners, making Florida a prime location for the academy, which could foster a new pipeline for aerospace talent.

“Many years ago, we had just NASA. Now that the private sector is heavily involved, we’re collaborating with local school boards, UCF, Florida Tech, and Florida State College to prepare the workforce of tomorrow,” Haridopolos continued.

Brevard County high schools are already offering hands-on experience through astronautics and flight exploration programs, and Haridopolos’ team plans to present these initiatives as part of their bid to bring the Space Academy to the Space Coast.

“To the credit of states like Texas, they’re putting a lot of money on the table to make this happen. We’re offering similar plans. But in the end, where’s everybody moving? They’re moving to Florida.”
