How Do Speed Cameras Identify Violating Cars on Multi-Lane Roads?
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque is equipped with 40 speed cameras, designed to pinpoint speeding vehicles even on multi-lane roads. Each camera utilizes radar technology and multiple cameras to differentiate between vehicles.
Todd Jackson, the chief technology officer for Mesa Technologies, explains that the system continuously monitors traffic using radar. When a vehicle speeds, it gets highlighted with a green box around it, confirming it as the violator. This box aligns with the respective lane number, ensuring clarity on where the violation occurred.
Speed Measurement
The cameras can track up to 256 vehicles simultaneously. They measure speed through radio waves that reflect off vehicles, thereby determining their speed. This capability allows the system to keep updating speed information as cars approach the photo capture zone.
Once a violation occurs and the photo is taken, images are sent to the Elevate processing platform for verification by human reviewers to ensure compliance with established protocols. Albuquerque Police also give the final approval before citations are mailed out, safeguarding the process.
Privacy Considerations
Jackson emphasizes the system’s respect for privacy. Personal vehicle data is not recorded unless a violation is detected, ensuring that only necessary information is captured for enforcement purposes.
