Challenges in Directing AI Design

Introducing Design Words: A Tool for Non-Designers

Greetings! I have created a tool that might be beneficial for you too.

For those not well-versed in design, explaining styles, layouts, and components can be incredibly challenging. They often use a specialized language that’s hard to navigate. To bridge this gap, I developed a website filled with pre-defined styles. This allows me to adjust or rearrange elements easily, helping me articulate what I want to my agent.

Welcome to Design Words.

The final design selected was version 8, which became my primary focus. From there, I made further tweaks, employing sub-agents to gain fresh perspectives on my objectives:

I’m eager to develop structured instructions for my agent’s MD to recreate styles in a specific manner. Initially, I thought having a grid of different generated styles would greatly benefit users, allowing them to choose a base to build upon. The prompt generation is important, but seeing the visual representation takes precedence for users before copying prompts for their agents.

I initiated a new discussion with Fable.

Version 8 remains my front-runner. As I load it, I notice that, without explicit instructions, AI often produces boilerplate templates. My goal is to develop a design system—perhaps varying styles—for my agent to create executions from. This tool must guide users in selecting styles while they brainstorm or refine their concepts. It should facilitate rapid prototyping.

I utilized a sub-agent for design critiques:

While this approach is beneficial, the layout variety feels lacking. Users need to feel they are genuinely exploring different styles while having the option to input specific preferences. The goal is for non-technical users looking to visualize their ideas through style references and generate corresponding prompts for their agents.

Throughout development, I regularly introduced prompts to explore potential enhancements.

This tool still doesn’t feel quite right; I’m unsure why. The array of options seems insufficiently varied. There’s an opportunity to compile a definitive design vocabulary, categorizing styles like ‘editorial’ or ‘brutalist.’ My aim is to present a clever blend of text and visuals enabling users to articulate their requirements effectively.

Despite these challenges, I focused on refining the interface to enhance usability, including larger previews for better visibility. Over time, the UI began to align more closely with my expectations.

After multiple iterations, I concluded that my shuffle and preview mechanism required improvement. The design options felt insufficiently varied and didn’t facilitate easy exploration of distinct layouts.

The purpose is to enable users to generate a new version of a landing page or a website quickly, using various styles to create a visually compelling template. It could cater to diverse projects, including personal sites, data displays, or informative feeds. My goal is to enhance this tool dramatically.

Despite the journey from “making it 10x better” to “a thousand times better,” positive feedback led to prototypes I genuinely liked. I collaborated with Droid to bring these designs to life, and I am continuously making adjustments.

For my sites, I aim to utilize here.now, a simple and efficient tool. However, since bensbites.com is hosted on Cloudflare, I initially faced challenges.

Can we publish this to bensbites.com/design-words ? via here.now? I want this renamed to ‘design words’ and updated accordingly.

Fortunately, I discovered that employing a Cloudflare Worker proxy allows me to deploy the site on here.now while ensuring the URL functions correctly without the need for any complex Cloudflare management.

In total, I engaged in 38 sessions, executed 116 prompts, and spent about two days on and off on this project.

Agent Insights: Models and Usage

Here’s what I used during different phases:

  • Idea – 150K Tokens

  • Prototype – 27.4M Tokens

  • Build – 353.5M Tokens

In summary, Design Words aims to empower non-designers to articulate their vision through a straightforward visual tool. I welcome your feedback, suggestions, or ideas for enhancements. Thank you for joining me on this journey!
