In a significant shift within the gaming industry, Microsoft has secured publishing rights for “Physint,” the highly anticipated follow-up to Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding. Originally revealed by PlayStation, the partnership move to Xbox was confirmed through an announcement on Xbox Wire. This new game is described as a spiritual successor to Kojima’s iconic Metal Gear Solid series, a franchise he famously parted ways with due to conflicts with Konami.
Kojima, after founding his own studio, has since created the critically acclaimed Death Stranding series and also has a publishing agreement with Xbox for the horror title “OD.” Interestingly, while Death Stranding 2 remains exclusive to PlayStation for now, it’s suggested that it may eventually come to Xbox.
During the transition, PlayStation’s lead, Herman Hulst, had previously stated that “Physint” was part of their collaboration; however, Kojima later revealed that Sony planned to cancel the project, prompting him to seek a partnership with Xbox. Both companies have hinted at collaborations beyond gaming, extending into film and television.
This partnership marks a strategic gain for Xbox, allowing them to appeal to audiences they previously struggled to engage with, and it aligns with their strategy of ambitious, multi-media projects. As the gaming landscape evolves, this unexpected alliance showcases Kojima’s influence and the significant investment Xbox is making in innovative gaming experiences.
