ZF Capitalizes on China’s Electric Truck Surge to Counter Slowdown in the West

The Shift of ZF Friedrichshafen Amid China’s Electric Truck Boom

German supplier ZF Friedrichshafen is heavily investing in the burgeoning electric truck market in China, expecting significant growth as electric trucks already make up about 30% of the Chinese market, a number projected to rise to 50% in the coming years. In contrast, Western markets face slow adoption due to limited infrastructure and incentives.

CEO Mathias Miedreich emphasized China’s dominant position in electric-drive technology, stating it is where “the action is.” ZF is collaborating with major Chinese truckmakers to showcase vehicles equipped with its electric powertrains at the upcoming IAA Transportation show.

While ZF anticipates that many trucks in China will rely on domestic suppliers for electric drives, it sees an opportunity to support those manufacturers as they venture abroad. This strategic partnership could lower component costs for ZF and benefit its European operations.

Additionally, ZF is localizing research and production in China to align with the rapid pace of market development. The company plans to debut significant innovations, such as magnet-free electric motors, in Shanghai, reflecting where it expects future demand.

Despite aiming for growth, ZF is grappling with financial difficulties, including a €1 billion net loss for 2024 and a rising debt of €10.5 billion due to significant investments in electric and software-defined vehicle technologies. The company’s restructuring includes plans to cut up to 14,000 jobs in Germany by 2028.

While some early signs of recovery are evident, such as improved operating margins, the broader European market remains volatile. The same Chinese OEMs ZF is targeting pose a challenge to its traditional clients, particularly in light of significant job cuts and excess production capacity in Europe.

Ultimately, ZF’s strategy of focusing on China may offer a temporary solution, but the long-term impact on its European clients and the risk of further market decline remain uncertain.
