FCC Opens Up Frequency Bands for Unique Space Technologies and Starlink Satellites

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is planning to expand wireless spectrum for space-based connectivity, emphasizing what Chairman Brendan Carr describes as “weird space stuff.” The FCC aims to reallocate spectrum between 12.7 GHz and 42 GHz to facilitate satellite use, potentially freeing over 1,000 megahertz for satellite broadband and earth stations.

Additionally, the FCC is looking into opening up 1,450 megahertz in the Ku- and Ka-bands, and 138.25 gigahertz in the D-band to enhance satellite communications, which may positively impact Starlink, owned by SpaceX. In a separate initiative, the FCC proposed expanding experimental spectrum for next-gen space missions, such as in-orbit servicing and lunar operations, which don’t focus on public connectivity.

The FCC also touched on ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for IoT devices, a technology previously employed by NASA for various space-related applications. Carr stated that the goal is to ensure consumers benefit from competitive, high-speed internet from next-gen satellites.

These developments follow a recent overhaul of satellite licensing rules aimed at expediting approval processes. In parallel, the FCC is auctioning off spectrum, including 160 megahertz in the upper C-band, while allowing SpaceX to acquire 65 megahertz from EchoStar for its Starlink services. Other players, such as AST SpaceMobile, have also received spectrum access from partners like AT&T and Verizon.
