Fixin’ to Eat: A Taste of Shreveport

Once upon a time, high school friends and I would race to Counter Culture Frozen Yogurt on Kings Hwy. in Shreveport for our beloved “Humphrey.” Known as the “Home of the Humphrey Yogart,” this local gem has been a staple since 1977, serving tangy frozen yogurt topped with fresh fruits, honey, and granola.

The Signature Humphrey

A Humphrey Yogart typically features strawberries, bananas, and grapes, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with granola. In my high school days, I often added chocolate chips, indulging in a treat that I’ve cherished ever since.

A Lasting Legacy

Approaching 50 years in operation, Counter Culture is a nostalgic staple. Founded by two college girls, it introduced the concept of fresh, simple food to the area.

Introducing New Favorites

While I initially stuck to the yogurt, I was introduced to the Avocado Delight sandwich—a creamy, flavorful delight with perfectly ripe avocado, bean sprouts, and cheese on whole wheat. It quickly became a favorite, especially with an upgrade to white sourdough.

Revisiting Childhood Comforts

Upon returning to Shreveport with my kids, I introduced them to the tangy yogurt, realizing how unique it is compared to what I found elsewhere. During a craving, I often found myself ordering a “baby” yogurt, wondering why the whole town wasn’t enjoying Counter Culture’s delicious offerings.

Branching Out

Over the years, my menu choices at Counter Culture have been limited to just a few items: the Humphrey, the Avocado Delight, and the creamy Baja Chicken Enchilada soup. However, I’ve decided it’s time to explore their extensive menu, which includes salads, sandwiches, and daily soup specials.

Enduring Nostalgia

Though the original Counter Culture building across from Centenary College now sits empty, it remains a cherished memory. While I continue to enjoy my Humphrey fix at various franchise locations in the Shreveport-Bossier area, I hold onto those high school memories and the timeless taste of my favorite yogurt.
