Southern Union State Community College Appoints Dr. Richard Pike as Dean of Health Sciences
OPELIKA — Southern Union State Community College has appointed Dr. Richard Pike as the new dean of health sciences, effective September 1. He takes over from the recently retired Dean Rhonda Davis.
Dr. Pike is an alumnus of Southern Union, where he earned an associate degree in science and his emergency medical technician certification. He furthered his education with a bachelor’s degree in political science/public administration from Troy University, a master’s in emergency management from Jacksonville State University, and a Doctor of Science degree from Faulkner University.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to be selected as the dean of health sciences at Southern Union State Community College,” Dr. Pike remarked. “Southern Union has played a transformational role in my life and career, making this appointment especially meaningful.”
Since 2016, Pike has been a member of the Southern Union EMS faculty. His previous experience includes working as a paramedic, firefighter, and currently as a flight paramedic. He has a strong foundation in emergency medical services, having served as a combat medic in the United States Army, and has held various leadership roles in civic organizations.
SUSCC President Todd Shackett expressed excitement about Dr. Pike’s appointment, stating, “We are excited to welcome Dr. Pike into this new leadership role and look forward to the contributions he will make to the continued success of our health sciences division.”
As dean, Dr. Pike aims to build upon the robust foundation laid by predecessors, particularly Dean Davis. He emphasized the importance of adapting to the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape and is committed to producing highly skilled professionals to meet community needs.
His key priorities as dean include:

- Strengthening partnerships with healthcare providers
- Expanding workforce development opportunities
- Ensuring the health sciences programs continue to offer high-quality education and training
Dr. Pike lives in Wedowee with his wife, Amanda, and their two sons.
