A university professor lived for 100 days in a 100-square-foot underwater habitat 22 feet below a lagoon in Key Largo, and upon resurfacing, he discovered he was half an inch shorter due to the prolonged exposure to increased pressure.

Joseph Dituri, an associate professor at the University of South Florida and a retired Navy saturation diving officer, recently completed a remarkable 100-day underwater mission, residing in a habitat located 22 feet beneath a lagoon in Key Largo. Dedicating this time to scientific research, Dituri emerged slightly shorter than when he entered—measuring just over 72 inches compared to his initial height of 73 inches.

The habitat he lived in differed significantly from a submarine. While submarines maintain near-surface pressure, Dituri’s habitat was at 1.6 times the surface pressure, a condition not overly distressing for a healthy body. Nonetheless, the increase in pressure exerted hydrostatic force from all directions, leading to a documented height decrease of half an inch.

In addition to his change in height, Dituri reported health improvements such as a significant reduction in cholesterol, decreased inflammation, and better sleep quality. However, he also mentioned developing short-sightedness, a side effect of his prolonged stay underwater.

Curiously, Dituri claimed his biological age decreased from 44 to 34, due in part to an increase in telomere length and circulating stem cells. These findings are presented in a research paper, though the sample size—his own experience without a control group—raises questions about their validity.

Since Dituri’s record, Rüdiger Koch has surpassed him, spending 120 days in a different underwater habitat, though no detailed accounts of his height or health changes have been published yet. This opens up further questions regarding the effects of extended underwater living on the human body, with Dituri’s height loss remaining a singular data point in ongoing discussions about human physiology under pressure.
