The recent report from the Department of Energy indicates a 1% decline in energy sector employment from 2024 to 2025, both nationally and in Louisiana, due to factors such as automation and policy changes. In Louisiana, jobs dropped from 161,131 to 160,000. Nationally, there was an overall loss of 86,000 jobs, with solar, wind, and hydroelectric industries experiencing the most significant reductions because of the previous administration’s policies.
Despite the job decline, there is a projected increase in demand for energy workers due to rising electricity needs and data center expansion. While petroleum and natural gas jobs fell by 3% and 4%, respectively, the median salary in the energy sector soared to $63,000, outpacing the national median of $51,000.
The administration’s focus on traditional energy sources like coal and nuclear has led to modest job increases in those areas. Advancements in AI and digital technologies in the energy sector are improving efficiency and reducing the need for low-skilled labor. Notably, the transmission, distribution, and storage sub-sectors emerged as job growth areas despite the overall downturn in energy employment.
