Parvathy Thiruvothu Calls for Celebrity Responsibility in Social Issues
Malayalam actor Parvathy Thiruvothu has emphasized the responsibility of film celebrities to support young people, particularly during challenging times like recent student protests in New Delhi. She criticized those in the film industry who remain silent on social and political issues despite benefiting from the support of the youth.
Celebrities Must Speak Up
In a conversation with Galatta Plus, Parvathy expressed her disappointment with actors and filmmakers who choose not to respond to the struggles faced by ordinary people and students, who have significantly contributed to their success. She remarked, “When the youth are in trouble and if not even a peep comes out from them (the celebrities), that hurts.”
The One-Sided Relationship
Parvathy argued that the visibility and success of celebrities are largely due to their audience’s support. “They are in a state of power because the youth gave them that power… But suddenly, you are just quiet and nowhere to be seen. That feels like a very one-sided relationship,” she stated. The actor highlighted that many young supporters are struggling to complete their education, yet still spend their limited resources on films featuring their favorite stars.
Evolving Views on Politics and Celebrity
Challenging the notion that actors should remain apolitical, Parvathy said, “We could have said that 10 years ago. But that ship has sailed.” She acknowledged facing backlash for her opinions but continues to speak out because she believes it’s essential. “There are people who genuinely hate me for the kind of stuff that I say, but they still watch my movies,” she noted, emphasizing her commitment to advocating for pressing social issues.
