Safety Reminders for Drivers This Labor Day Weekend
As Labor Day weekend concluded, safety officials urged returning drivers to prioritize alertness, avoid impairments, and ensure their vehicles were road-ready.
Driving Over Flying
Despite rising gas prices, Anlleyn Venegas from AAA indicated that many travelers still preferred driving to their destinations. “Even with higher gas prices, it’s still more affordable to drive than to fly,” she noted.
CHP’s Labor Day Enforcement
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) launched a statewide enforcement period focused on impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and seatbelt violations over the holiday weekend. “You’re going to see a lot of CHP out there on our freeways, on our highways, on our surface streets,” said CHP Bakersfield Public Information Officer Jorge Toro. “The goal is to keep our roadways safe.”
During last year’s enforcement period, CHP reported over 1,200 impaired-driving arrests and nearly 500 DUI-related crashes, leading to significant injuries and fatalities.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign
The enforcement period aligned with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which highlights the dangers of drunk driving. Statistics show that one person is killed in a drunk-driving incident every 44 minutes in the United States.
Understanding Impairment
Toro emphasized that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol; it also includes cannabis, illicit drugs, and even some over-the-counter medications. He encouraged drivers to be vigilant and ready for abrupt traffic changes.
Avoid Drowsy Driving
Venegas warned that “drowsy driving is as dangerous as driving under the influence,” stressing the importance of being well-rested.

For those traveling home, Toro provided essential vehicle checks:
- Ensure you have jumper cables.
- Check tire pressure (PSI).
- Top off all fluids.
- Make sure your phone is charged.
