Ogunquit, Maine: A Strong Summer for Tourism
Maine’s tourism sector is reporting a successful summer, particularly in coastal areas, with a notable surge in Canadian visitors. At Terrace by the Sea in Ogunquit, General Manager Dominick Patterson highlighted that they experienced a record-breaking season with over 400 additional room bookings compared to last year, particularly significant due to prior COVID-related cancellations from Canadian tourists.
Maine’s coastal economy heavily relies on Canadian tourists, with approximately 428,000 Canadian travelers crossing into the state in June and July 2025. That number increased to 482,000 in the same months of 2026—adding 54,000 visitors, indicating a recovery in cross-border travel after a decline believed to be linked to tensions between the U.S. and Canada, including trade disputes.
In Wells, the increase in Canadian visitors was less pronounced, yet businesses thrived thanks to favorable weather, according to Beachcomber owner Carol Ann Schmitt. Visitors have noted busy spots around town, indicating a vibrant atmosphere.
As the summer season winds down, Maine businesses are optimistic about the future. Patterson expressed hope for a return to pre-pandemic tourism levels within the next few years.
