City Council Speaker Julie Menin Signals Possible Lawsuit Against Luxury Venue for Public Space Misuse
City Council Speaker Julie Menin is considering joining a lawsuit against Guastavino’s, a luxury event venue located under the Ed Koch-Queensboro Bridge. Allegations have surfaced that the venue has unlawfully claimed a public plaza, blocking access for New Yorkers while charging clients up to $300,000 for private events.
In a letter dated September 3, Menin expressed her concerns, emphasizing the need for the plaza to remain accessible to everyone. The venue has reportedly excluded citizens from the space for over a decade, with claims that it utilized counterfeit signage and security personnel to enforce these restrictions.
The lawsuit, initiated by various citizens including a mentalist, seeks a judicial declaration affirming the plaza’s status as public land and aims to recover any profits accrued by Guastavino’s through its operations. The area, originally acquired in 1900 for the bridge’s construction, was designated for public use.
Menin has requested a meeting with the Rose Group, which oversees Guastavino’s, and indicated her willingness to support the lawsuit through an amicus brief if necessary. She highlighted the importance of clear guidelines regarding the plaza’s management, access, and security practices moving forward.
While Guastavino’s has not yet commented in detail, they acknowledged the plaza’s public status and expressed intentions to collaborate with city officials to find a resolution.
