Volkswagen is transitioning its Osnabrück plant from car production to defence manufacturing, selling the site to Israeli investment firm Aurelius Capital and the state of Lower Saxony. This conversion aims to preserve about 1,400 of the plant’s 1,800 jobs, marking a shift from a potential closure.
Aurelius will take a majority stake, collaborating with Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to manufacture air-defence systems for Germany and Europe, but not actual missiles. This move is part of Volkswagen’s strategy to address overcapacity issues and job cuts—50,000 additional job losses are expected across several German plants.
The deal is part of a broader trend in Germany’s automotive sector, as companies adapt to increased defence spending driven by geopolitical concerns. However, local opposition exists due to Osnabrück’s historical significance as a “city of peace,” raising ethical questions about Volkswagen’s role in defence production.
While the arrangement offers a potential model for other struggling factories, it does not solve the overarching issue of job loss in the automotive industry, highlighting the challenges ahead as the sector evolves.
