The 2026 Arnold Classic promises to be an electrifying event for bodybuilding enthusiasts. With its unique blend of competition and camaraderie, it offers a platform where the world’s elite bodybuilders showcase their hard work and dedication. On January 28, 2026, industry veterans Shawn Ray and Bob Cicherillo shared insights on how the current climate may challenge reigning favorites like Hadi Choopan as they prepare for a showdown in Columbus, OH.
The 2026 Arnold Classic will witness an impressive lineup of the best Open class contenders competing for glory. Hadi Choopan, who clinched the silver medal at Mr. Olympia for three consecutive years, stands out as the frontrunner. However, recent political turmoil in Iran raises concerns about his attendance at the event.
Assuming Choopan can participate, he’ll compete against Chinedu Andrew “Jacked” Obiekea, who finished third at the Olympia and recently secured a victory at the 2025 Romania Pro. This win allows him to compete at the Arnold Classic without the added pressure of Olympia qualifications. Additionally, Choopan will face formidable opponents like Martin Fitzwater and Nick Walker. The stakes couldn’t be higher; the victor of the Open title will walk away with a lucrative $750,000 prize and elevated status as a leading contender for the upcoming Olympia.

Cicherillo highlighted that political issues could hinder Choopan from reaching the U.S. He remained cautiously optimistic regarding Choopan’s participation, noting:
“Unfortunately, this is just the politics of not only our sport but any sport. We can only hope he’ll make it to the Arnold based on that assumption,” he stated.
However, he expressed concern that Choopan’s focus might be compromised due to the volatile situation in his homeland:
“The distractions for him would be immense, knowing what he has left behind in Iran, which is facing serious challenges right now,” Cicherillo added.
Echoing these sentiments, Ray emphasized that if Choopan isn’t entirely mentally prepared for victory, he could be at risk of losing:
“If his mind isn’t 100 percent on winning that show, it’s an opportunity for him to get beaten. Presently, conditions are ripe for him to lose focus,” Ray explained.
As for Samson Dauda, both Ray and Cicherillo had reservations about his decision to bulk up to over 350 pounds.
“Being larger isn’t always advantageous when competing against leaner, harder bodybuilders—it can actually work against you,” Ray noted.
“I appreciate his decision to stay off the stage for a bit, but I don’t believe pushing up to 340 or 350 pounds is advisable. At nearly 40 years old, skin elasticity isn’t everlasting—regardless of who you are,” Cicherillo cautioned.
As the event approaches, Iain Valliere shared his picks, predicting that Choopan will clinch his second AC title, with Jacked and Fitzwater taking the next two spots. Conversely, Cicherillo anticipates Walker will finish in fourth place.
Should Choopan make it to the U.S., both Cicherillo and Ray believe he still faces significant challenges on the road to securing gold. The 2026 Arnold Classic is set to take place from March 5-8 in Columbus, OH.
