Tips for Safe Family Travel
July marks UV Safety Month, a great reminder to prioritize safety during summer adventures! Here are some tips to keep your family safe while traveling, whether by car or plane, and especially when venturing abroad.
Car Travel Safety
-
Car Seats are Essential: Always use a car seat for infants and young children. Infants should ride in a rear-facing seat until they outgrow it based on height or weight. After that, transition to a forward-facing seat with a harness.
-
Rental Car Seats: If using a rental, ensure the seat fits correctly, is in good condition, and comes with instructions. Children outgrowing their harness should use a booster seat until they are tall enough for the seat belt—usually around 4’9″ and ages 8 to 12.
-
Back Seat Safety: Kids under 13 should ride in the back seat. Never place a rear-facing seat in front of an airbag.
Plane Travel Safety
-
Arrive Early: Give yourself extra time at the airport, especially when traveling with young children.
-
Dress for Convenience: Kids should wear layers that are easy to remove, and shoes that facilitate quick security checks.
-
Strollers: Strollers can go through security and can be checked in, making it easier to navigate the airport.
-
Explain Screening: Talk to kids about the screening process beforehand so they understand what to expect.
-
Comfort and Snacks: Bring snacks, toys, and comfort items. To help ease ear pain during takeoff and landing, have them eat, drink, or use gum.
International Travel Considerations
-
Consult a Doctor: Before international travel, check for any required vaccines or medications.
-
Mosquito Protection: In regions prone to mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria, bring adequate mosquito protection.
-
Jet Lag Tips: Adjust sleep schedules 2-3 days prior to departure. Encourage outdoor activities to help reset body clocks once you arrive.
-
Water Safety: Always stay close to children near water; remember that pools and beaches may not have lifeguards. Life jackets are a must on boats!
With planning and research, your summer travel can be both fun and safe. Enjoy your adventures and create unforgettable memories while keeping your family secure!
