In Brief

Today, the German company Isar Aerospace successfully achieved orbit with their Spectrum launcher, lifting off from Andøya Spaceport in Norway.

In-Depth

At 21:12 BST/22:12 CEST, Isar Aerospace’s two-stage launch vehicle soared into the sky. The Spectrum launcher, standing 28 meters tall and 2 meters in diameter, is capable of delivering payloads of up to 1,000 kg to low Earth orbit.

ESA’s Director General, Josef Aschbacher, hailed the event as a historic milestone, stating, “Spectrum quite literally rose to the challenge and delivered its payloads in low Earth orbit.” He emphasized the importance of this success for Europe’s launch service sector.

This launch follows the rocket’s first test flight, which successfully proved its liftoff capability. Unlike the previous test, this flight includes six commercial and educational CubeSats along with an experiment demonstrating new technologies.

The mission, supported by ESA’s Boost! program, also marks a success for Isar Aerospace, which has benefitted from multiple rounds of co-funding for the development of the Spectrum launch service.
