Double Fine Productions’ leader, Tim Schafer, recently discussed how his studio managed to avoid closure amidst significant layoffs at Xbox. He stated, “no one puts Double Fine out of business except for me.” In an interview with Bloomberg, Schafer emphasized the importance of securing the studio’s intellectual property and funding to regain its independence.
After Microsoft’s acquisition of Double Fine in 2019, initial optimism faded as leadership changes shifted priorities, leading to underwhelming financial performances from some titles. Schafer noted that while their mission aligned well with Xbox’s initially, the shift in focus was concerning, especially after Phil Spencer’s retirement. He emphasized the need for great games on platforms like Game Pass, stating, “Asha’s not going to shoot my dog. I’m going to shoot it. But I’m not going to shoot it because it’s going to do great.”
Following independence, Double Fine reduced its team size and has now been focusing on presenting new game concepts to investors, navigating a changed gaming landscape. Schafer remarked on the complexities of the industry, stating, “How little I understand about the business just shows how hard it is to know.”
The studio launched its fifth Amnesia Fortnight event to foster creativity, emphasizing the balance between producing fun, innovative games and financial viability. Schafer remains optimistic about the creative process, describing it as “soul-enriching” even amid the pressure and challenges.
