The Front Door Community Center, which had its soft opening on August 22, aims to create a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community in Bloomington. Board president Melanie Davis has been working toward this goal for many years, initially recognizing the community’s need for a designated gathering space beyond bars, especially for younger members and those who prefer not to socialize in nightlife settings.
Historically, Rachael’s Cafe served as a notable meeting place for the community until its closure in 2015. Davis, a friend of the café’s owner, started gathering items from the restaurant in hopes of establishing a similar venue. In 2019, plans for a new center began, but delays ensued due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, conversations resumed with community members, leading to the establishment of The Front Door.
With over 20 years of experience in volunteering with LGBTQ+ organizations, Davis also founded Protect Our People in 2023, which is focused on providing gender-affirming care. The two organizations have since merged, offering resources like a gender-affirming closet at The Front Door, which provides clothing sourced from donations.
The center hosts various events and activities, including self-defense lessons and arts and crafts sessions, cultivating a welcoming environment for all. Community feedback is encouraged, as seen in events like “Come Dream with Us.” The center aims to facilitate connections between different generations of the LGBTQ+ community, fostering a sense of belonging.
Board member Minassa Gabon emphasizes the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels welcome and safe. Reflecting on her own experiences, she hopes that one day safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community will not be necessary. The center is designed to be a welcoming home for all, with aspirations for lasting inclusivity.
