ArianeGroup is considering increasing the deployment rate of its Ariane 6 heavy launcher due to a surge in satellite demand, according to CEO Christophe Bruneau. The European Space Agency (ESA) is also looking into accelerating the launch frequency of both the Ariane 6 and Vega-C rockets to address potential bottlenecks. Arianespace, the subsidiary managing launches from French Guiana, aims for a stable output of nine to ten launches per year by 2027.
Bruneau noted that discussions are ongoing with ESA and a supply chain of around 600 companies, with a key challenge being the investment required to boost solid propellant supply for the Ariane 6. This heavy rocket, which has completed nine flights since its inaugural launch in 2024, faces a strategic imperative as Europe seeks to reduce dependence on external providers like SpaceX for satellite launches.
With the September 9-10 summit in France aimed at promoting Europe’s space independence, officials emphasize the need for Europe to secure its own access to orbit amidst rising competition.
