Chula Vista Teen Earns Prestigious International Science Award Using Just $100 in Supplies – San Diego Union-Tribune

This year marked a significant milestone for the Sweetwater Union High School District, as three students participated in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair for the first time in nearly 30 years. Among them, 17-year-old Ihan Sung from Eastlake High School achieved notable recognition, winning fourth place for developing an innovative device to produce ammonia—a critical component in fertilizer production.

Typically, ammonia production relies on the Haber-Bosch process, which demands high pressure and temperature, leading to considerable energy consumption. Recognizing the need for a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative, Sung devised a smaller-scale method that captures nitrogen from the atmosphere and combines it with hydrogen obtained through electrolysis.

Utilizing materials like silicone, polycarbonate tubing, and a 3D printer gifted to him, he created a device that uses low-pressure glow discharge under magnetic confinement to break nitrogen bonds and generate ammonia with an iron oxide catalyst. Although it’s not suited for large-scale production, Sung believes it could benefit smaller farms.

In contrast, Ronald Johnathan Wyatt and Giles Albert Del Priore, both 18 and also from Eastlake High School, designed a device aimed at assisting dementia patients in managing daily challenges.Drawing from personal experiences with memory-related illnesses in their families, the duo focused on offering a technological support system for individuals with cognitive impairments. Their device employs artificial intelligence to verify information for users, remind them to take medications, and facilitate communication with caregivers.

As they transition from high school, Wyatt is beginning his studies at UC Santa Cruz, while Del Priore has enrolled at the University of San Francisco.

When applying to colleges, Sung hopes to attend Stanford University or UC Berkeley, attracted by their engineering programs. Their biology teacher, Amanda Williams, praised the students’ achievements, emphasizing that remarkable scientific contributions don’t always require substantial resources or connections. With project costs under $100 for Sung and about $80 for Wyatt and Del Priore, financial constraints did not hinder their innovation.

Sung’s journey to the international fair was challenging, requiring him to troubleshoot various technical issues, embodying the true spirit of scientific inquiry. Additionally, he participated as a judge in a middle school science fair, finding joy in mentoring younger students and sharing his passion for science, a sentiment echoed by Del Priore.
