NASA Astronauts Take Labor Day Off at the ISS
On Labor Day, September 7, NASA astronauts Jack Hathaway, Jessica Meir, and Anil Menon, along with European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, will enjoy a day off aboard the International Space Station (ISS). In contrast, their three Russian cosmonaut colleagues—Pyotr Dubrov, Andrey Fedyaev, and Anna Kikina—will remain on duty.
The Russian crew is set to monitor the Progress 94 resupply spacecraft as it undocks, carrying trash and outdated equipment from the ISS. This spacecraft will later be replaced by Progress 96, which is scheduled to launch from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome on September 9.
The astronauts stationed at the ISS typically operate on a schedule that allows for weekends and holidays off, which is crucial for maintaining their well-being and productivity during missions. However, traditional celebrations, like barbecuing, are not possible in the space environment due to safety restrictions on open flames.
Despite the challenges of being away from home, astronauts strive to celebrate significant holidays together to foster camaraderie and help ease the emotional strain of long-duration spaceflight.
