Sungrow and UNSW Introduce AI-Driven Community Energy Initiative in Southern Highlands of NSW

Sungrow and UNSW Launch AI-Enabled Community Energy Project in NSW Southern Highlands

BOWRAL, Australia, Sept. 7, 2026 – Sungrow, a leader in PV inverters and energy storage systems, has partnered with UNSW Sydney and JT Solar Technology (Aussie Hybrid Solar) to initiate an AI-enabled community energy project at The Gibraltar Bowral in the Southern Highlands. This project showcases the integration of solar generation, battery storage, and intelligent energy management to enhance energy resilience, maximize renewable energy usage, and decrease grid dependency.

A Smarter, Community-Centric Approach to Energy

Energy demand at commercial sites such as hotels and event venues can vary throughout the day. Rising electricity costs and the need for reliable power amplify the importance of efficient energy management.

The community-based virtual power plant (VPP) project tackles these issues by merging solar energy generation, battery storage, and smart energy management. The system intelligently determines the optimal times for energy usage, storage, or dispatch, based on solar availability, site demands, electricity prices, grid requirements, and battery health.

Key Components:

  • Sungrow’s ST200CF PowerKeeper battery energy storage system: Deployed across multiple PK stacks.
  • SH110CX hybrid inverter: Installed by Aussie Hybrid Solar.
  • AI Energy Management System (AI EMS): Coordinated through UNSW’s implementation.

Enhancing Energy Resilience at The Gibraltar Bowral

As a premium hotel and event venue, The Gibraltar Bowral requires reliable power for its diverse energy needs essential for guest services and events.

Core Features of the PowerKeeper System:

  1. Modular DC-Coupled Architecture: Allows flexible capacity expansion and simplifies retrofits to existing systems.
  2. Hospitality-Optimized Deployment: Compact design fits limited spaces while adhering to safety standards.
  3. Ultra-Reliable Performance: Long-term operational stability, including full-site backup power.
  4. AI and VPP-Ready Intelligence: Boosts renewable energy self-consumption and resilience through autonomous charge-discharge optimization.

“The value of a system like this goes beyond payback. It needs to be safe and intelligent enough to respond to changing energy needs,” said Richard Chen, Business Development Manager of Sungrow.

Collaboration Driving Innovation

Steve Doyle, co-owner of JT Solar and Voltval, remarked, “Sungrow has provided strong technical data and support. Their independent verification gave us the confidence when sizing the system.”

By blending solar, storage, and AI-driven energy management, the project sets a precedent for a flexible and renewable-powered future.

About JT Solar Technology

Operating as Aussie Hybrid Solar, JT Solar brings over 17 years of expertise in solar installation and project delivery. They aim to help Australian customers reduce energy bills and promote sustainable energy practices.
