Southwest Airlines to Enter Airport Lounge Market
Southwest Airlines is set to enter the airport lounge market for the first time, planning to open four lounges in the U.S. by late 2027, with at least seven more to follow. The first locations will be at Austin-Bergstrom, Baltimore/Washington, Daniel K. Inouye International in Honolulu, and Nashville International airports.
Partnership with Chase
The airline is teaming up with Chase to offer a sophisticated lounge experience, featuring local dining options and premium amenities. Southwest’s Executive Vice President, Tony Roach, emphasized that the lounges will extend the airline’s trusted brand of hospitality.
Expansion Plans
These initial lounges mark the start of a larger network, with Southwest targeting high-demand business and leisure markets for future locations. Access will be linked to a new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card from Chase, launching in 2027.
Shift to Premium Travel
This development reflects a shift for Southwest, which historically distinguished itself through a simpler model and policies such as open seating and free checked baggage. In recent years, the airline has been evolving, ending open seating in favor of assigned seats and introducing checked baggage fees.
The first passengers are anticipated to enter the new lounges by late 2027, marking a significant step into the premium travel market traditionally dominated by full-service airlines.
