Pet Owners’ Travel Strategies: Planning Trips with their Furry Friends | National

The Rise of Pet-Friendly Travel

Nearly half (45%) of American pet owners have turned down travel opportunities that can’t accommodate their pets, reflecting a growing trend among pet owners. A recent survey of 2,000 pet owners reveals that 73% prefer road trips over flights to ensure their furry companions can join them.

Generational Differences in Travel Habits

Younger generations are particularly keen on pet travel; 70% of millennials and 75% of Generation Z have taken their pets on road trips in the past five years. In comparison, only 58% of Gen X and 40% of baby boomers have done the same.

The Emotional Toll of Leaving Pets Behind

The survey also highlighted emotional factors associated with travel. Almost half (47%) of respondents feel guilty leaving their pets behind, and the same percentage worried about their pets’ well-being while away. Many pet owners (31%) limit their trips to just a day or two, feeling uneasy about being away for longer.

Christina Valente of Subaru emphasizes the importance of pets as family, noting the company’s commitment to initiatives that support pet welfare, such as partnerships with the ASPCA.

Reasons for Traveling with Pets

Among those who travel with their pets, 51% cite the feeling of reassurance that comes from having their pet with them, while 43% love seeing their pets experience new places. Memories from the trips range from scenic coastal drives to lakeside outings, all emphasizing the joy of shared experiences.

Challenges on the Road

However, pet-friendly travel does come with challenges. The top concerns include:

  • Finding pet-friendly accommodations (41%)
  • Planning stops around the pet’s needs (36%)
  • Managing pet anxiety during car rides (28%)

Many pet owners (45%) are willing to drive more than four hours just to keep their pets by their side.

Preparing for the Journey

Trevor Maki from Subaru advises that a successful pet-friendly road trip begins with a well-prepared vehicle, highlighting the need for ample space, good visibility, and easy-to-clean seats.
