Labor Day weekend brought a surge of customers to businesses across the Triangle, thanks to cooler temperatures and various events that encouraged residents to venture outdoors.
At Raleigh’s Gipson Play Plaza, families flocked to The Family Scoop ice cream truck. Owner James Delaney highlighted the significance of summer for seasonal businesses, stating, “The summer is everything for us.” As this was his first full summer, he emphasized the importance of making good sales to support future business growth.
The pleasant weather was a relief after several days of intense heat, which had deterred families from outdoor activities. Delaney remarked on the ideal conditions, noting, “A fresh day in the eighties with a little bit of a breeze is really wonderful.”
Similarly, downtown businesses benefited from the cooler climate. Julian Jacobs, owner of The Burrow, a vintage clothing store, reported a stark contrast between the sweltering days earlier in the week and the busy weekend. He mentioned that large events, like the African American Cultural Festival, significantly boosted foot traffic and sales.
Consumer interest in Labor Day shopping also appeared to rise, with a CivicScience survey indicating that 22% of shoppers planned to take advantage of sales this year, up from 12% in 2022. Jacobs mentioned his strategy of setting up discount racks to attract budget-conscious shoppers.
