In a neglected area of Melbourne’s west, nature has thrived in unexpected ways. Among overgrown grass and scattered rubbish, a masked lapwing was spotted nurturing her four chicks. Though the surroundings may not be appealing to people, they provide a perfect habitat for these native birds.
The masked lapwing, also known as the spur-winged plover, is known for nesting on the ground and seeking open spaces to spot predators. Robert Irvine, a nature enthusiast, captured a beautiful photograph of the lapwing family in Sunshine and remarked on the resilience of wildlife in urban settings.
He highlights that many assume nature is pristine, but birds like the masked lapwing adapt to their surroundings, showing incredible survival skills—unlike many suburban areas where cats and other predators pose significant threats to such vulnerable chicks.
