NASA has chosen Blue Origin to develop the Mars Telecommunications Network (MTN), a $700 million endeavor aimed at enhancing communication and navigation services for future Mars missions. This new orbiter, set to launch by 2030, will significantly improve data relay capabilities as current Mars orbiters age. MTN will operate primarily as a communication tool, unlike the existing orbiters like Curiosity and Perseverance, which also collect scientific data.
NASA views this project as crucial for preparing for crewed missions to Mars in the late 2030s or early 2040s. The MTN is based on Blue Origin’s Blue Ring spacecraft platform, designed to offer high-performance capabilities at reduced costs. The contract dictates that Blue Origin must deliver the spacecraft to NASA by December 31, 2028.
