Business owners aim for increased access to Daytona Beach on Labor Day

Volusia County is temporarily blocking about 125 on-beach parking spaces during the Labor Day weekend to enhance safety by creating more space between pedestrians and vehicles. This represents less than 3% of the county’s total of over 5,000 on-beach parking spots. Tammy Malphurs, the county’s Beach Safety director, emphasized the importance of safety during this busy holiday weekend.

However, some local business owners, like Tom Caffrey from World’s Most Famous Brewery, are concerned that these restrictions, along with ongoing beach access closures, may negatively impact sales, especially since visitor numbers appear to be declining. Caffrey questioned why certain underused areas, such as Dahlia Park, are being closed off.

Another business owner, Grady McCarty of Punk Rock Pizza, expressed worries that these parking limitations could deter people from visiting Daytona Beach, known for its unique driving and parking on the sand.

Conversely, some visitors, such as Trendarius Henderson from Georgia, support the safety measures, prioritizing the well-being of children over convenience. Caffrey suggested that temporary beach access from Main Street to International Speedway Boulevard could help alleviate parking issues, but a request for comment from the county on this proposal has not been addressed.
