A German company, Isar Aerospace, successfully launched its Spectrum rocket from the Norwegian spaceport at Andoya, marking the first time a privately developed rocket from continental Europe reached orbit. This achievement was celebrated by both the company and the German Ministry for Research, Technology, and Space.
The Spectrum rocket is designed for small and medium payloads, carrying five small satellites and a technological experiment on this mission. This launch is seen as a significant step towards positioning Europe to offer its own satellite launches, as the continent has been lagging behind in the commercial space market.
Despite an unsuccessful attempt 18 months prior, Isar has received orders through 2028 and aims to increase its launch capacity to 40 rockets per year. The company is also developing a second launch site in Canada and is gearing up to compete with other space giants, including SpaceX and ArianeGroup.
Isar Aerospace has recently secured €200 million ($232 million) from the European Space Agency to further develop its launch infrastructure.
