The New England Aquarium recently celebrated the 27th birthday of their cownose ray named Mystic, an impressive milestone considering that these rays typically live just 18 to 20 years in the wild. Mystic’s longevity is attributed to the dedicated care she receives from the aquarium staff, who monitor her health closely and provide a diet similar to what she would eat in the wild.
On her special day, Mystic was treated to a special “fish and shrimp cake.” In addition to her diet, the staff also ensures she stays mentally stimulated through activities like foraging and problem-solving exercises using puzzle balls filled with food.
Mystic now enjoys her retirement at the Quincy Animal Care Center after a long stint in the aquarium’s Giant Ocean Tank. Cownose rays, known for their distinctive snout resembling a cow’s nose, are classified as “Vulnerable” by the IUCN Red List.
