David King, the chief engineer at Vertical Aerospace, a British company developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, advises young engineers to “don’t be afraid of the unknown.” King, who leads the creation of the Valo air taxi, emphasizes the importance of safely exploring and learning through discovery. Reflecting on 35 years in aerospace, he appreciates the daily potential for new learning, crucial for innovating within the evolving air taxi market.
Vertical’s VX4 prototype recently made headlines, being the first eVTOL to perform a transition flight at the Farnborough Airshow, showcasing its ability to switch from helicopter to airplane mode. King, who joined Vertical in 2023 after roles at Bell and Leonardo, believes in testing rapidly while managing risks to drive innovation. The company aims for commercial service by 2029, positioning the Valo to significantly reduce travel times in urban environments, such as a quick 11-minute flight from Miami Airport to Fort Lauderdale. However, challenges remain, particularly in gaining regulatory approval for air taxis.
