Residents of the Van Nest community recently expressed strong opposition to their local community board’s support for a bill designating a four-block area as a Yemeni cultural district. At a meeting of Bronx Community Board 11, tensions flared as members of the Van Nest Neighborhood Alliance and local residents criticized the bill, which is designed to recognize a region known for its concentration of Yemeni-owned businesses, dubbed “Little Yemen.”
Although the proposed district aims to enhance cultural recognition and eligibility for grants, community members voiced concerns about a lack of engagement in the legislative process. They argue that historically significant community identity and contributions were being overlooked.
Some members, including Sharlene Jackson Mendez, vice president of the Van Nest Neighborhood Alliance, articulated feeling sidelined in discussions about their neighborhood’s future. They questioned the degree to which the Yemeni-American community has contributed to the area’s culture and economy. Mendez emphasized that while Yemeni-owned businesses indeed boosted local commerce, cultural recognition shouldn’t solely hinge on economic metrics.
In contrast, former board chair Yahay Obeid defended the cultural district proposal as a mechanism to acknowledge the contributions of the Yemeni community, arguing it would benefit the neighborhood overall. Tensions reached a boiling point, specifically for community members like Sam Ghaleb, a Yemeni-American teenager, who felt personally attacked during the meeting.
Assemblymember John Zaccaro, who sponsored the bill, clarified that the district’s designation would amplify rather than erase local history, promoting inclusivity and appreciation for the Yemeni-American community’s resilience. Conversations around cultural identity and inclusiveness are expected to continue as the bill moves forward.
