Hyundai Motor and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have introduced the ‘Hyundai-KOICA NextGen’ initiative in Ghana, a five-year program aimed at enhancing technical training in hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) maintenance. The project, which involves an investment of KRW5 billion (approximately US$3.7 million), will benefit 405 teachers and students through the establishment of two new educational centers.
A preliminary assessment revealed significant deficiencies in Ghana’s automotive training institutions: 80% lack updated curricula, 70% utilize equipment older than 10 years, and only 12.5% of instructors have experience with EVs. Consequently, employer satisfaction with technical graduates hovers below 40%.
This initiative is the first of its kind under Hyundai’s ‘Hyundai Continue’ Creating Shared Value initiative, funded in partnership with KOICA. Ghana’s emergence as a budding automotive hub in West Africa makes workforce development a crucial aspect of its growth strategy.
Joongsun Ko, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Planning at Hyundai Motor Company, emphasized the initiative’s commitment to boosting technology talent in the automotive sector. He stated that by updating the curriculum to include the latest advancements in EV maintenance, they are equipping the Ghanaian youth with essential skills for the future.
