Powerful Storms Impact D.C. Area

Powerful storms rolled through the D.C. area Thursday night, resulting in strong winds and heavy rain that left downed trees, blocked roads, and damaged homes and vehicles across the District. Winds were reported reaching up to 70 mph, with a peak gust of 64 mph at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Notable Incidents
- A large tree fell at the intersection of 5th and F streets NE, crushing a car and blocking both the roadway and sidewalks. D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen confirmed the situation, mentioning that local residents were safe. He also noted another tree was leaning dangerously against a home.

- In the 200 block of 8th Street SE, a large tree fell onto a rowhouse. Fortunately, all occupants were able to evacuate the home without injury.

Power Outages
The severe weather also led to downed trees and power lines, affecting approximately 15,968 Pepco customers as of 4:30 AM Friday.
Safety Advice
D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management agency advises residents to stay alert due to the risk of falling branches. Suggested precautions include:
- Avoiding walking directly beneath low-lying branches
- Wearing closed-toe shoes and being cautious around debris
- Not parking near trees that seem unstable
