Researchers uncover ancient hydrogen signals—could this aid in charting the universe?

Astronomers utilizing the MeerKAT radio telescope have made a groundbreaking discovery by detecting hydrogen gas from billions of light-years away, dating back to a time when the universe was significantly younger than its current age of 13.8 billion years. This research introduces a new method for mapping the large-scale structure of the universe through hydrogen intensity mapping, which tracks the position of hydrogen, the universe’s lightest and most abundant element.

The process relies on the faint radio signal emitted by neutral hydrogen known as the 21-centimeter line. As the universe expands due to dark energy, the wavelength of this radio signal stretches—a phenomenon known as redshift. This redshift allows astronomers to ascertain how long signals have been traveling to Earth, helping them to establish the period when the hydrogen exists.

By employing hydrogen intensity mapping, astronomers can detect radio emissions from previously unseen galaxies and construct a three-dimensional representation of the universe’s largest structures. Notably, this research moves away from traditional methods that blend radio wave detection with visible light observations.

The team analyzed about 96 hours of observations from the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa, uncovering signals of hydrogen that date back around 4 to 5 billion years. This achievement highlights the potential of hydrogen mapping as an efficient means to understand galaxy formation and evolution.

Future surveys, particularly with the forthcoming Square Kilometre Array Observatory, are expected to leverage these advancements in hydrogen mapping, which could significantly contribute to our comprehension of cosmic structures. Researchers are now looking to gather additional observations that cover more extensive areas of the sky, promising even more refined hydrogen maps to illuminate the universe’s evolution over time.
