This push follows previous attempts by lawmakers to tighten restrictions on Chinese automakers, which were supported by the Alliance.
Senators Elissa Slotkin and Bernie Moreno have backed a proposal to codify regulations from the Biden administration that effectively ban Chinese manufacturers from selling or producing passenger and light-duty vehicles for the U.S. market. However, there are concerns about provisions in the legislation that could unintentionally affect other companies like Mercedes-Benz due to ownership structures.
John Bozzella, CEO of the Alliance, emphasized that a successful legislative effort would send a strong message regarding U.S. national security and China’s ambitions in the automotive sector. Critics point to the increasing presence of Chinese automakers in North America, making the urgency of such legislation even more pronounced.
Bozzella stated that Chinese manufacturers are already distributing subsidized vehicles with advanced connected software globally and urged Congress to act quickly to establish these bans as law. Whether Congress can garner sufficient support for this legislation remains uncertain.
