Labor Day Marks Start of Autumn Travel Spike as Affluent Seek to Escape Crowds

The Amalfi Coast’s cliffside village of Atrani at sunset highlights the beauty increasingly sought by luxury travelers during the fall season. Recent data indicates that fall has become the new peak time for luxury holidays, with significant increases in bookings and sales: 59% and 69% surges compared to last year, driven by demand from high-net-worth individuals, who now prefer September to August.

This trend, dubbed “fallcation,” reflects a broader shift in travel habits, influenced by factors such as rising temperatures in summer and changing demographics—particularly among baby boomers, Gen Xers, and digital nomads. Europe’s top destinations for affluent travelers now include Paris, the Amalfi Coast, and the French Riviera.

However, with this shift, hotel rates in popular regions are rising sharply, sometimes aligning with or exceeding summer prices, creating new challenges akin to those experienced in peak summer months. As demand for luxury travel increases, average nightly rates for high-end hotels have also surged, suggesting a higher premium is placed on these experiences.
