Action games akin to Tides of Annihilation are rare, and after 45 minutes, this Arthurian-themed title has exceeded my expectations.

Tides of Annihilation Hands-On Impressions

Overview

Entering my hands-on session with Tides of Annihilation at Gamescom, I had some reservations fueled by lukewarm pre-release content. However, my experience quickly transformed those doubts into excitement. This stylish action game definitely packs a punch.

Gameplay Experience

I spent my session exploring a story mission featuring Gwendolyn, the game’s protagonist, in a decayed London setting. Highlights included a thrilling multi-phase boss battle against the antagonist Mordred.

Combat Mechanics

Immediately, combat feels weighty and satisfying. Gwendolyn’s main damage-dealing method involves summoning her Phantom Knights. You can have multiple Knights equipped and switch between them seamlessly, capitalizing on their unique skills.

Fighting against Mordred, I strategically swapped between a nimble Knight with a time-slowing ability and a heavier, stronger Knight. The variety in combat styles adds depth, with numerous combos to discover.

Challenge Level

The combat is accessible—button-mashing works to an extent—but requires skill in dodging and counterattacking. My battle with Mordred, labeled “medium” difficulty, proved challenging, spanning multiple phases and environments. The spectacle of this showdown was intense, with stunning animations and mechanics that ramped up the tension.

Verdict

My time with Tides of Annihilation exceeded expectations. Its combat mechanics, art style, and overall gameplay hold promise for a potential hit upon release. There’s plenty to explore further, and I look forward to spending more time mastering Gwendolyn’s skills.
