Researchers have found that psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in “magic mushrooms,” may help protect nerves from damage caused by chemotherapy, specifically a condition known as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). A recent study in mice indicated that administering psilocybin before chemotherapy prevented pain, numbness, and sensitivity, effects that can persist through multiple rounds of treatment.
CIPN impacts a significant portion of patients undergoing certain chemotherapies and can severely affect quality of life and mobility, potentially leading to reduced treatment efficacy. The study, conducted by researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, showed that psilocybin helps maintain mitochondrial transport within nerve cells. This is crucial because healthy mitochondria provide energy to neurons, and chemotherapy often disrupts this energy supply.
While these findings are promising, notably for future human clinical trials, the effects of psilocybin beyond its psychedelic properties remain to be thoroughly understood. Ongoing research will evaluate its effectiveness and safety before considering its use alongside conventional cancer treatments.
